A franchise has an order imposed on it. A filmography does not: the films were made one after another and share a sensibility rather than a story, so nothing is spoiled by starting in the wrong place. What a director page answers is the harder question of where a body of work is best entered, which is a matter of judgement and is treated as one here.

So each page carries two orderings. Release order is the record, and it shows the shape of a career: the early film made for nothing, the one that changed what the studios would fund, the late work that could only have been made afterwards. The starting order is a route through the same films for someone who has seen none of them, and it rarely begins at the beginning. Both are on every page, one click apart.
