There are two defensible ways to watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the internet argues about them endlessly. This page takes a position: watch it in release order the first time.

Release order is how the story was built. Reveals land when they were designed to land, cameos pay off characters you have just met, and post-credits scenes point forward instead of sideways. Chronological order is a genuinely great second watch — it just spoils itself on a first one.

Release order or chronological order?

Release order means watching in the order the films came out. Chronological order means watching in the order events happen in-universe — which puts Captain America: The First Avenger (set in 1943) and Captain Marvel (set in 1995) near the front.

The case for release order is simple: the MCU was written assuming you had seen the previous film, not the earliest event. Watching Captain Marvel before Iron Man defuses her introduction in Endgame. Watching Black Widow in its chronological slot pulls you out of the Infinity War cliffhanger for two hours.

The case for chronological order is that it reads as one continuous history, and if you already know the story it is a genuinely different experience. Use the toggle on the MCU page to switch between the two at any point.

Do I have to watch the Disney+ series?

No — but a few of them matter. The MCU stopped treating television as optional around Phase 4, and several films now open on threads a series started.

WandaVision sets up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness directly.
Loki (both seasons) is the spine of the entire multiverse storyline.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier explains who is carrying the shield in Brave New World.
Ms. Marvel leads straight into The Marvels.
Everything else — Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Werewolf by Night, the What If...? seasons — is self-contained and skippable on a first pass.

The short version: essentials only

If the full list is too many, turn on the Essentials only filter on the MCU page. That trims it to the core Infinity Saga and Multiverse Saga throughline — the films and series that other films assume you have seen.

It is still a long watch, but it is roughly two-thirds the size and it never leaves you confused about who someone is or why they are angry.

Where to start if you have never seen any of it

Start with Iron Man (2008). It is the first film, it is self-contained, and it establishes the tone. If you bounce off it, try Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Guardians of the Galaxy — they are the two most different films in the series and one of them usually lands.

How many MCU movies and shows are there?

This list tracks 75 titles: the feature films plus the Disney+ series, specials and Marvel Animation shows, through everything Marvel has announced — out to Black Panther 3 in December 2028. Titles without a confirmed date are included but clearly badged. Older Marvel Television shows such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Netflix run are excluded, because Marvel Studios does not treat them as canon to the film timeline.

Do I need to watch the MCU in order at all?

For the standalone films, no. But the four Avengers films and everything from Phase 4 onward assume a lot of prior knowledge, and they are much weaker cold.

Which MCU movie should I watch first?

Iron Man (2008). It is the first film released and the one every later film builds on.
