Can you skip Werewolf by Night?
Yes, on a first watch. It is self-contained, and nothing in the main MCU story depends on it. Come back to it later if you want more. In chronological order, reaching it takes about 48h 44m of essential viewing across 27 titles. Show only the MCU essentials.
Skippable, and it is the most purely enjoyable hour Marvel has produced. Fifty-three minutes, self-contained, requiring nothing, and barely a superhero production at all.
It is shot and cut as a 1930s Universal horror film, in black and white with simulated film grain, projector flicker, optical wipes, cigarette burns in the corner of the frame and a score by Michael Giacchino, who directed it himself. The commitment to the pastiche is total and it is the most distinctive thing the studio has released.
The story is small by design: a group of monster hunters gather at a dead patriarch's estate to compete for a relic by hunting a creature in a maze, and almost everything happens in one location over one night. Gael García Bernal is the lead and the real pleasure is Man-Thing, a large swamp creature rendered practically and treated with great affection.
A colour version exists and the black and white is the one to watch. It connects to almost nothing, which is precisely why it is worth an hour.
