Can you skip Deadpool & Wolverine?
No. It carries part of the main MCU throughline, and what comes after it assumes you have seen it. The next essential title is The Fantastic Four: First Steps. In chronological order, reaching it takes about 63h 56m of essential viewing across 39 titles. See the full MCU order.
Marked essential, and the honest version is that it is essential to the franchise's business rather than to its plot: it brought the Fox properties formally into the MCU. Watch the two previous Deadpool films and, ideally, Logan, which the opening five minutes are a direct and fairly tasteless response to.
It is also the most reference-dependent film on this page. A large share of the running time is occupied by appearances from two decades of abandoned superhero films, and the pleasure available is proportional to how many of them you have seen. Viewers without that history are watching a crowd react to strangers.
What works is the pairing. Hugh Jackman returning as a version of Wolverine who failed catastrophically and is drinking about it gives the film something to hold, and the long fight between the two of them inside a car is the best action sequence. Ryan Reynolds is doing what he does, at volume, for two hours.
The commentary on the studio's own corporate situation is relentless and occasionally very funny, and it is also the thing that will date fastest. Emma Corrin's villain is wasted. It made an enormous amount of money and left the shared universe essentially where it found it.
