Can you skip The Fast and the Furious?
No. It carries part of the main Fast & Furious throughline, and what comes after it assumes you have seen it. The next essential title is Fast & Furious. See the full Fast & Furious order.
Essential, and almost nothing like the eleven films it produced. There are no satellites, no spies and no global conspiracy. An undercover officer is sent to find out who is hijacking lorries on the freeway, infiltrates a crew of Los Angeles street racers, and spends the film being slowly won over by the man he is there to arrest.
It is openly Point Break with cars, which the production never denied, and the borrowed structure is why it works: the plot is about loyalty rather than about the robberies, and the ending turns on a man letting a criminal drive away. Everything the series later built its identity on, the idea of a found family and the word it keeps repeating, is actually here, stated quietly and without the later self-importance.
The origin is a magazine article about New York street racing, and the film's texture comes out of that reporting: the cars are specific, the modifications are real, the races are short, and the film is interested in the subculture as a thing people do on a Thursday night rather than as a backdrop. Nothing in it is physically impossible.
Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are both much younger and much looser here than later, and the chemistry between them is the only reason the series survived its first two sequels. Watch it first in either order, because both orders put it first.
