Joel and Ethan Coen made eighteen films together and have since made three apart. Nothing is a sequel, so order is entirely free — but the filmography swings so hard between registers that where you enter genuinely changes what you think they do.
The through-line is not tone. It is that someone has a plan, and the plan is beyond them. Fargo, Blood Simple, Burn After Reading and No Country are all the same film in different weather.

Start with Fargo
It is the cleanest distillation of the whole filmography: a kidnapping scheme that collapses because every single person involved is slightly worse at their job than the plan requires. It also has Frances McDormand's Marge, who is the rarest thing in a Coen film — a competent, decent person who is not punished for it.
Then No Country for Old Men, which won four Oscars including Best Picture, has almost no musical score, and turns the same idea completely humourless.
The Big Lebowski is not the place to start
It is the most beloved film they made and the least representative one. It is a Raymond Chandler plot happening to a man in a dressing gown, and it plays enormously better once you already know what a Coen crime plot normally does to people.
Watch it third or fourth, not first.
The early run
Blood Simple (1984) is the debut and already fully formed — a Texas noir where every character is acting on incomplete information. Raising Arizona (1987) is cartoon-fast and nothing like it. Miller's Crossing (1990) is the most formally controlled thing they made and the most underrated. Barton Fink (1991) won the Palme d'Or.
That four-film stretch is the argument that they were the best American directors of their generation.
The ones to skip, and the solo films
Intolerable Cruelty (2003) and The Ladykillers (2004) are the studio-comedy years, and both are widely considered their weakest. The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) was their first flop and has since found defenders.
Since 2018 they have worked separately. The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) is Joel alone — stark black-and-white Shakespeare with Denzel Washington, and no comedy anywhere in it. Drive-Away Dolls (2024) and Honey Don't! (2025) are Ethan alone, and much looser.
