Resident Evil movies in order

The four continuities

Nothing crosses between these. Picking one and finishing it is the entire strategy.

• The Anderson films (2002–2017) — six films with Milla Jovovich. The longest line and the one people mean by "the Resident Evil movies".
• Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) — a restart adapting the first two games directly. Faithful, cheap-looking, and no sequel followed.
• The Netflix series (2022) — its own continuity across two timelines. Cancelled after eight episodes.
• Resident Evil (2026) — a fourth start from Sony, directed by Zach Cregger.

The Anderson films, and where they stop being about the games

Watch these in release order — they are strictly sequential. Resident Evil (2002) and Apocalypse (2004) are the closest to the source material; Apocalypse is the one actually set in Raccoon City.

From Extinction (2007) onwards the series goes post-apocalyptic and stops pretending to adapt anything. If you came for the games, that is the point to know about in advance. The Final Chapter (2017) closes the line and is the highest-grossing of the six.

If you want the games on screen

Welcome to Raccoon City is the most faithful adaptation made so far — it covers the first two games, uses the actual characters, and looks like the Spencer Mansion. It also had a fraction of the budget of the Anderson films and it shows.

It underperformed and the planned sequels never happened, so it is a dead end. Watch it if faithfulness matters more to you than polish.

The 2026 reboot

Released 18 September 2026, directed by Zach Cregger — Barbarian, Weapons — and running 90 minutes. It follows a medical courier trapped in Raccoon City during the outbreak.

It is a fresh start with no connection to anything above it, and it is the first version of Resident Evil on screen that is being built primarily as a horror film rather than an action one.
