Octopussy
A circus, a jewel smuggling ring, and a nuclear near-miss in West Germany.

Can you skip Octopussy?
Yes, on a first watch. It is self-contained, and nothing in the main James Bond story depends on it. Come back to it later if you want more. Show only the James Bond essentials.
Skippable, and it is the one with the clown costume, which has done more damage to its reputation than the rest of the film deserves. The sequence it sits in is actually the best thing here: Bond, in a circus, with minutes to find a nuclear device nobody will believe exists, trying to convince an American general while dressed as a clown and being thrown out repeatedly.
Underneath the silliness is a genuinely alarming Cold War premise. A rogue Soviet general intends to detonate a warhead on a US airbase in West Germany so that it reads as an American accident, forcing European disarmament, and the film is clear that nobody on either side would ever know. Steven Berkoff plays him at full volume.
The India material is where it sags: a tiger hunt, a man on a bed of nails, a yo-yo saw, and a tone that treats the setting as a theme park. Louis Jourdan's Kamal Khan is suave and inert.
It was released weeks before Never Say Never Again, with Connery returning in a rival production, and the press of the day called it the Battle of the Bonds. This one won commercially. Watch it for the circus act and nothing else.
