The Berman Era · 1987 – 2005
Star Trek: Nemesis
The last TNG film, and the entry that closed the era for seven years.
Availability changes by country and by week, so this searches JustWatch rather than guessing.
Can you skip Star Trek: Nemesis?
Yes, on a first watch. It is self-contained, and nothing in the main Star Trek story depends on it. Come back to it later if you want more. Show only the Star Trek essentials.
Skippable, and it is the film that stopped Star Trek for seven years. It performed poorly enough on release to end the film series, and Enterprise was cancelled within three years of it, which left the franchise off screens entirely until 2009.
The core idea is a reasonable one badly handled. Picard meets a younger clone of himself, raised in brutality, and the film wants to ask how much of a person is circumstance. Tom Hardy, in one of his first significant roles, plays the part with real commitment and is given dialogue that states the theme rather than dramatising it.
Around that are decisions that read as a different film: a dune-buggy chase inserted for action, a telepathic assault on a character that the film uses as a plot device and then forgets, and a final act built on ramming two ships together. The ensemble are sidelined again, and a significant death at the end is undercut by a sequence immediately afterwards that signals it can be reversed.
There is a case for watching it before Picard, whose first season deals with the aftermath, but that show recaps what it needs. The TNG films are worth it for First Contact and nothing else.
