Can you skip Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi?
Yes, on a first watch. It is self-contained, and nothing in the main Star Wars story depends on it. Come back to it later if you want more. In chronological order, reaching it takes about 4h 38m of essential viewing across 3 titles. Show only the Star Wars essentials.
Skippable, and the cheapest thing on this page to try: short films of twelve to twenty minutes, in the Clone Wars animation style, each self-contained. The whole first batch runs about ninety minutes.
The Dooku shorts are the reason to watch. They follow a Jedi Master who is not yet a villain, watching the Order he belongs to side repeatedly with wealth and authority against the people he was sent to protect, and declining to do anything about it. The prequel films never explain why a respected Jedi left; these do, in under an hour, and they make Attack of the Clones better.
The Ahsoka shorts are slighter and more sentimental, covering her infancy and the period immediately after Order 66, and the one showing how she survived it is the strongest of them. A second volume widened the format to other characters with mixed results.
Nothing requires any of it. It assumes The Clone Wars and rewards it, and the Dooku half is the most efficient hour of character work the franchise has produced.
