Can you skip Jason Bourne?
Yes, on a first watch. It is self-contained, and nothing in the main Bourne story depends on it. Come back to it later if you want more. In chronological order, reaching it takes about 5h 42m of essential viewing across 3 titles. Show only the Bourne essentials.
Skippable, and the one entry here that adds nothing. Damon and Greengrass came back nine years on, and the film they made repeats the shape of Supremacy with the pieces moved around: Bourne is off the grid, somebody surfaces with a file, an agency director wants him dead, a sympathetic analyst wants him brought in, and there is a long vehicular sequence at the end.
The new material is a revelation about Bourne's father and the founding of Treadstone, bolted onto a character whose history had already been closed out. It converts an institutional story into a family one, and it makes the agency smaller rather than more frightening. Ultimatum had already answered who he is; this answers it again, differently, with less.
Damon has famously few lines, somewhere around two dozen, and the performance is a man watching doors. Tommy Lee Jones plays the director at one register throughout. Alicia Vikander is given the only ambiguous part in the film and the script keeps declining to commit to what she wants. Vincent Cassel's Asset is a hitman with a grudge, which is the first time this series has given an opponent a personal motive, and it is a downgrade.
The Las Vegas chase is enormous and weightless: a SWAT vehicle driving through dozens of cars on the Strip, shot and cut like the earlier films but with none of their physics. If you want more after Ultimatum, Legacy is the more curious film. This is the more competent one and the less worthwhile.
