The Godfather Epic
Parts I and II re-edited into strict chronological order, from 1901 forward. The only chronological version.
Availability changes by country and by week, so this searches JustWatch rather than guessing.
Can you skip The Godfather Epic?
Yes, on a first watch. It is self-contained, and nothing in the main The Godfather story depends on it. Come back to it later if you want more. Show only the The Godfather essentials.
Never watch this first, and do not treat it as the chronological option the way you would use the order toggle on any other franchise here. It is a different cut of two films, not a different sequence of them, and the difference matters.
It began as a television version in 1977, assembled so that the two films could run across several nights, and it has been reissued over the years under several names with varying amounts of restored footage. The principle is constant: Parts I and II are unstitched and reassembled so that events run from 1901 forward. The young Vito's rise plays as one continuous story, then the 1945 material, then Michael in 1958. Around an hour of footage cut from the theatrical releases is restored along the way.
What it costs is the thing Part II is built on. That film's power comes from the intercutting: Vito's rise set directly against Michael's decay, so that the audience draws the comparison the film refuses to state. Untangle the two timelines and the comparison disappears. You are left with a well-told chronicle rather than an argument, and the most sophisticated piece of structure in American cinema is undone to make the plot easier to follow, which it never needed.
Worth it once, if you have seen both films more than once and want the restored material and the odd experience of hearing a familiar story in an unfamiliar order. As a first watch it would be a genuine loss, and as a general recommendation it is the wrong advice.
