The Matrix
A hacker learns the world is a simulation. One of the most influential films ever made.
Availability changes by country and by week, so this searches JustWatch rather than guessing.
Can you skip The Matrix?
Not really, though nothing here has to be watched in order. It is one of the main The Matrix titles rather than a side story, and it stands on its own. See the full The Matrix order.
No, and the more useful thing to say is that you can stop here. This is the rare first film in a series that ends completely. The war is not won, but Neo's arc closes, the question the film asked is answered, and the last shot has him hang up a phone and fly. Nothing is withheld to sell you a ticket to the next one. That is why the "just watch the first one" position has survived twenty-five years of argument, and it is a legitimate way to watch this series rather than a cop-out.
What has aged best is not the bullet time or the coats. It is the teaching. The film spends its middle hour explaining its own rules with unusual patience: what the Matrix is, what residual self image means, why agents can appear in anyone, why dying inside kills you outside. By the time Neo fights Smith in the subway you know exactly what each of them can and cannot do, so the choreography reads as argument rather than noise. Most films that copied the look skipped that hour, and that is why they look like imitations.
The other thing worth noticing on a rewatch is how much of it is a conversion narrative with the serial numbers filed off. A man is told the world is false, is offered a choice he cannot un-take, dies, and comes back certain. The Wachowskis have since been explicit about reading it as a story about transition, and the film supports that reading without needing it.
If you are going on, understand what you are signing up for. Reloaded and Revolutions were shot back to back and released seven months apart, and the first ends mid-sentence. Watch both or neither.
