Alien vs. Predator
2004, Antarctica. Chronologically first, and contradicted by everything Ridley Scott made afterwards.
Availability changes by country and by week, so this searches JustWatch rather than guessing.
Can you skip Alien vs. Predator?
Yes, on a first watch. It is self-contained, and nothing in the main Alien story depends on it. Come back to it later if you want more. Show only the Alien essentials.
Skip it, and take care with the chronological toggle on this franchise, because this film is first in it. Switch to in-universe order and this is what the list opens on: a 2004 expedition to a pyramid under the Antarctic ice. Starting a first watch here means starting with the one entry the rest of the series has written out.
The contradiction is not a matter of tone. Covenant establishes that the creature was engineered by David around 2104. This film has fully formed xenomorphs on Earth a century earlier, bred in a structure that has stood for thousands of years. Both cannot be true, and Scott's films are the ones the series continued from. Romulus and Alien: Earth both build on the prequels, and neither acknowledges that any of this happened.
On its own terms it is a competent monster movie with one good idea, which is that the pyramid rearranges itself every ten minutes and the humans are livestock rather than protagonists. It was also cut for a wider certificate than anything else here, a strange choice for a crossover between two hard-R franchises, and the violence suffers for it.
Watch it if you grew up with the comics and want to see the matchup staged. Do not watch it as part of the Alien story, because it is not part of the Alien story.
