Can you skip Suicide Squad?
Yes, on a first watch. It is self-contained, and nothing in the main DC story depends on it. What it does leave behind is one scene during the credits. In chronological order, reaching it takes about 23h 34m of essential viewing across 10 titles. Show only the DC essentials.
Skippable, and it is the clearest case of a film being rebuilt in the edit. After the reaction to Batman v Superman, the studio commissioned work on a lighter version, and reporting at the time described two competing cuts and a trailer house involved in assembling one of them. What was released has needle drops over almost every scene in the first half hour and three separate introductions to the same characters.
The result has no spine. A squad is assembled to deal with a threat that is caused by the person assembling them, the mission is to walk across a city, and the antagonist is a woman turning in the air above a portal. Characters announce their skills and then do not use them.
Two things survive. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn is a genuinely good piece of casting that the franchise kept using for a decade, and Viola Davis's Amanda Waller is the most frightening person in the DCEU and has been in everything since. Jared Leto's Joker was heavily trailed, extensively cut, and amounts to about eight minutes.
Nothing requires it. The Suicide Squad five years later is a different film by a different director with an overlapping cast and needs none of this.
