Can you skip Supergirl?

Yes, on a first watch. It is self-contained, and nothing in the main DC story depends on it. Come back to it later if you want more. In chronological order, reaching it takes about 4h 30m of essential viewing across 2 titles. Show only the DC essentials.

Skippable, and it is the forgotten one. Produced by the same company as the Reeve films and sharing their continuity, with Marc McClure reprising Jimmy Olsen, it was released to poor reviews and a weak box office and effectively ended the series' expansion.

The problem is scale. A Kryptonian survivor arrives on Earth to recover a power source that has fallen into the hands of a small-town witch, and the film's stakes never rise above a local dispute between two women over a landscaper. Faye Dunaway plays the villain with enormous relish in a film that cannot match her.

Helen Slater is good in the part and visibly working without support. The flying sequences reuse the techniques of the earlier films and look fine; the direction around them is flat, and a long stretch at a girls' boarding school stalls the middle completely.

It is also a film about a young woman written almost entirely as a romantic rivalry, which is the thing most viewers now find hardest. A shorter international cut and a longer version both circulate. Watch it only for completeness.
