Denis Villeneuve movies in order

Eight English-language and Quebec features, all standalone except Dune. Here is where to begin.

Updated 5 August 2026 · 8 titles tracked

Villeneuve is the rare modern director whose films are both enormous and quiet. Almost nothing connects, so order is free — except Dune, which is one story across three films.

The thing to get right is which one you meet him through.

Start with Arrival or Sicario

Arrival is the most complete statement of what he does: first contact treated as a linguistics problem, and a structural turn that recontextualises the entire film. It also happens to be his most emotionally direct.

Sicario is the most gripping. The border convoy and the night-vision tunnel sequence are two of the best-sustained tension set pieces of the last decade.

From there: Prisoners, then Blade Runner 2049, then Dune.

Watch Blade Runner 1982 first

Blade Runner 2049 is a sequel to a film from thirty-five years earlier, and it assumes you have seen it. It is not incomprehensible without the original, but almost every emotional beat lands harder with it.

The site has a full Blade Runner order, including the three official short films that bridge the two.

Dune is one story, not three films

Part One ends mid-narrative by design — it covers roughly half the first novel and does not resolve. Watch Parts One and Two together if you can. Part Three, adapting Dune Messiah, arrives in December 2026.

The one nobody mentions

Incendies (2010), the Quebec film that got him noticed, remains his most devastating. It is also the hardest to recommend casually, for reasons that become obvious.

Common questions

What order should I watch Denis Villeneuve movies in?

Any order, since they are standalone — except the Dune films, which are one continuous story. Start with Arrival or Sicario.

Do I need to watch Blade Runner before Blade Runner 2049?

Strongly recommended. 2049 is a direct sequel set thirty years later and assumes familiarity with the 1982 film.

Which Villeneuve movie should I watch first?

Arrival is the best introduction. Sicario is the most immediately gripping.
