Dune movies in order

Three separate adaptations of the same books, plus a prequel series set ten millennia before Paul Atreides was born.

Updated 4 August 2026 · 7 titles tracked

The first thing to understand is that these are not sequels to each other. Lynch's 1984 film, the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries and Villeneuve's trilogy are three separate attempts at the same novel.

Pick one adaptation. For almost everyone that is Villeneuve's.

The modern trilogy

Dune: Part One (2021), Dune: Part Two (2024), Dune: Part Three (18 December 2026). Parts One and Two together adapt the first novel; Part Three adapts Dune Messiah.

Part One ends mid-story by design — it covers roughly half the book and does not resolve. Watch the two together if you can.

Where does Dune: Prophecy fit?

Ten thousand years before everything else. It follows the sisterhood that eventually becomes the Bene Gesserit, and it is set so far back that nothing in the films depends on it.

Watch it after Part Two if you want the background on why the Bene Gesserit behave the way they do. It is a supplement, not a prerequisite.

Are the older adaptations worth it?

Lynch's Dune (1984) is a fascinating failure — visually extraordinary, narratively incoherent, and disowned by its own director. Worth seeing after Villeneuve's films, purely for the contrast.

Frank Herbert's Dune (2000) is the most faithful adaptation of the three. It looks like what it was — a Sci-Fi Channel miniseries with a modest budget — but it gets far more of the book onto the screen. Its sequel covers Messiah and Children of Dune.

Common questions

What order should I watch the Dune movies?

For the modern trilogy: Dune: Part One, Dune: Part Two, then Dune: Part Three. The 1984 Lynch film and the 2000 miniseries are separate adaptations, not part of that continuity.

Do I need to watch Dune: Prophecy?

No. It is set roughly ten thousand years before the films and works as background rather than as a prerequisite.

When does Dune: Part Three come out?

18 December 2026. It adapts Dune Messiah, the second novel.

Is the 1984 Dune connected to the new films?

No. It is a separate adaptation of the same novel, made by David Lynch and later disowned by him.
