The order that matters is Ocean's Eleven (2001), Twelve (2004), Thirteen (2007). Those three are a proper trilogy — Twelve and Thirteen both follow directly on.

Two things sit outside it. Ocean's 11 (1960) is the Rat Pack film that the 2001 one remakes; it is a separate story and nothing carries over. Ocean's 8 (2018) is a spin-off about Danny's sister.

Start with the 2001 film

A casino heist where the entire pleasure is watching competent people be competent. It is not a tense film and it is not trying to be — the tone is closer to a hangout movie that happens to have a robbery in it.

You do not need the 1960 original at all. It is worth seeing once for Sinatra, Martin and Davis Jr., but it is famously more fun to have made than it is to watch.

Twelve is the problem one

It follows directly from Eleven, moves the crew to Europe, and then disappears into a self-referential joke involving Julia Roberts that the film is far more amused by than the audience was.

It is not skippable in the strict sense — Thirteen makes small references back — but nothing important is lost if you go straight from Eleven to Thirteen.

Thirteen returns to Las Vegas and to what worked, and is the proper end of the trilogy.

Ocean's 8 and the prequel

Ocean's 8 follows Debbie Ocean, Danny's sister, and a robbery at the Met Gala. It works on its own, though it assumes you know the shape of the setup.

An untitled prequel is dated for 25 June 2027, with Margot Robbie, set at the Monaco Grand Prix and following Danny Ocean's parents. It has had a difficult development including a change of director, so treat that date as firm but not settled.
