Spider-Man movies in order

Three live-action Peter Parkers, one animated Miles Morales, and a Sony universe with no Spider-Man in it at all.

Updated 5 August 2026 · 18 titles tracked

Spider-Man is the most confusing character in film, and it is not close. Five separate continuities across twenty-four years, three actors playing Peter Parker, an animated series about someone else entirely, and a Sony universe built from his villains that mostly does not feature him.

The trick is the same as with DC: stop looking for one order, and pick a universe.

Every Spider-Man film, grouped by universe

Five separate continuities. Only within each one does order carry real meaning.

The five universes

Each is self-contained. None requires the others.

  • The Raimi trilogy (2002–2007) — Tobey Maguire. The films that proved superhero cinema could work at all. Spider-Man 2 is still one of the best of them.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man (2012–2014) — Andrew Garfield. A reboot that retold the origin five years later and stopped after two films.
  • The MCU films (2017– ) — Tom Holland. No origin story; he shows up already established, mentored by Tony Stark. These sit inside the wider MCU.
  • The Spider-Verse (2018– ) — animated, and about Miles Morales rather than Peter Parker. Widely considered the best Spider-Man films ever made.
  • Sony's Spider-Man Universe (2018–2024) — Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven. Spider-Man villains without Spider-Man. Six films, and it has now ended.

Where No Way Home fits

This is the source of most of the confusion. Spider-Man: No Way Home deliberately pulls the Raimi and Amazing Spider-Men into the MCU for one film, via a multiverse spell.

It is a crossover, not a merge. The continuities do not connect before it and do not connect after it. But it does mean the film lands enormously harder if you have seen the other two series — the entire emotional payload is built on knowing those characters.

If you only watch one thing first, watch Spider-Man 2.

Where to start

Into the Spider-Verse if you want the best film. It requires nothing at all, and it is a genuinely extraordinary piece of animation.

Spider-Man (2002) if you want the full history in order.

Spider-Man: Homecoming if you are watching the MCU and just want Spider-Man in context.

What you can skip

The whole of Sony's Spider-Man Universe, honestly. Venom has its defenders and is entertainingly odd; Morbius, Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter are widely regarded as among the worst superhero films made, and none of them connects meaningfully to anything else.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is also skippable unless you are watching before No Way Home — it is stuffed with setup for sequels that never happened.

Common questions

What order should I watch the Spider-Man movies in?

Pick a continuity. For the full history in release order: the Raimi trilogy (2002–2007), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012–2014), then the MCU films from Homecoming. The Spider-Verse films and Sony's Venom universe are separate again.

How many Spider-Man movies are there?

Twenty across five continuities — three Raimi, two Amazing, four MCU, three Spider-Verse, and six in Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

Do I need to watch the old Spider-Man films before No Way Home?

Not to follow it, but strongly recommended. Its emotional payload depends almost entirely on knowing the Raimi and Amazing Spider-Men.

Is Venom part of the MCU?

No. Venom belongs to Sony's Spider-Man Universe, a separate continuity. A Let There Be Carnage post-credits scene briefly connects to No Way Home, and that is the extent of it.

Which Spider-Man movie is the best?

Usually Spider-Man 2 (2004) or Into the Spider-Verse (2018). The animated films have the stronger critical standing.
