Wicked movies in order
Two films from one stage musical, and a 1939 classic that happens after both of them.
Updated 6 August 2026 · 3 titles tracked
The order is simple: Wicked (2024), then Wicked: For Good (2025). They are one story split in half — the film adaptation of act one and act two of the stage musical.
The interesting part is the third film on this page. Wicked is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, so the 1939 film comes last in story order despite being made eighty-five years earlier.

Do you need to watch The Wizard of Oz first?
No, but it helps. Wicked assumes a rough familiarity with the 1939 film — it expects you to recognise the Wicked Witch of the West, the ruby slippers, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and to know broadly where all of it ends up. The whole point is watching those pieces arrive from a completely different angle.
If you have never seen Oz, you will still follow Wicked. You will just miss most of the reveals landing.
Why part one is longer than the musical
Wicked runs 160 minutes and Wicked: For Good runs 138. The stage musical is about two and a half hours including an interval — so the two films together are roughly twice the length of the thing they adapt.
That is not padding for its own sake. Act one is the stronger half on stage and the films give it room; act two is where the musical has always been thinner, and the second film adds material rather than stretching it.
Where Oz actually sits
Dorothy arrives partway through Wicked: For Good, not after it. The second film runs concurrent with the 1939 story for a stretch and then continues past it, which is why "chronological order" here is an approximation rather than a clean line.
The practical answer: watch Wicked, then For Good, then The Wizard of Oz — or watch Oz first if you have never seen it at all.

How long are the Wicked movies?
