Can you skip X-Men: The Last Stand?
Yes, on a first watch. It is self-contained, and nothing in the main X-Men story depends on it. What it does leave behind is one scene during the credits. In chronological order, reaching it takes about 6h 10m of essential viewing across 3 titles. Show only the X-Men essentials.
Skippable, and the franchise itself agrees: Days of Future Past deliberately erases its ending, so most of what happens here is undone by a later film in the same series.
The production explains a great deal. Bryan Singer left to make Superman Returns, taking several collaborators, and Brett Ratner took over a film already dated for release. What arrived is a hundred and four minutes carrying two separate storylines, either of which could have been a film: a pharmaceutical cure for mutation, which is the best political premise the series ever had, and the Phoenix saga, which is the most famous story in the comics.
Neither gets room. The cure is introduced, debated for one good scene and then reduced to a weapon in a fight on Alcatraz. The Phoenix material is handled by having Jean stand still and look angry for most of the running time while men discuss her. Two major characters are killed in ways that read as contract management, one of them offscreen.
There are good pieces, including the single scene where Magneto is cured and left sitting on a park bench. If you are watching the original trilogy, the honest advice is to read a summary of the deaths and go to Days of Future Past, which is going to undo them anyway.
