James Cameron movies in order

Nine films he claims, four of which have held the record for highest-grossing ever made.

Updated 5 August 2026 · 10 titles tracked

Cameron has directed fewer films than almost any director of his stature — and an absurd share of them have been, at some point, the highest-grossing film ever made.

Only two connect: the Terminator films, and the Avatar films. Everything else stands alone.

Start with Terminator 2 or Aliens

He made the two best sequels in cinema history, which is a genuinely strange thing to be able to say about one director.

Terminator 2 is the best action film of its decade and the birth of modern visual effects. Aliens turns a haunted-house horror into a war film without breaking a single thing the first film established.

Watch The Terminator before T2, and ideally Alien before Aliens — but both sequels are comprehensible cold.

Piranha II does not count

His credited debut is Piranha II: The Spawning (1982), a film he was fired from during production and has never counted as his own. Skip it without guilt; he would.

The blockbusters

Titanic won eleven Oscars and held the box-office record for twelve years, until Cameron took it off himself with Avatar. Both are much better directed than their ubiquity suggests.

The Avatar sequels are their own thing — technically astonishing, narratively simple, and best seen on the largest screen you can find. They sit in the Avatar order.

Common questions

What order should I watch James Cameron movies in?

Start with Terminator 2 or Aliens. Only the Terminator and Avatar films connect to each other; everything else is standalone.

How many movies has James Cameron directed?

Ten credited, but he disowns Piranha II: The Spawning, having been fired during its production.

Do I need to watch The Terminator before Terminator 2?

Recommended but not required. T2 explains its own premise, though the first film makes the sequel land harder.
