Paranormal Activity is the most scrambled found-footage series ever made. The third film is set in 1988. The second is set mostly *before* the first — and partly after. The Marked Ones runs alongside the fourth and converges with its ending.

Release order gives you a pile of disconnected sequels. Chronological order gives you one family's history across twenty-five years, which is what the films were quietly building.

The chronological order

Paranormal Activity 3 (1988), Paranormal Activity 2 (2006), Paranormal Activity (2006), Paranormal Activity 4 (2011), The Marked Ones (2012), The Ghost Dimension (2013). Next of Kin is a standalone reboot and sits outside all of it.

The second film brackets the first

This is the detail that confuses everyone. Most of Paranormal Activity 2 takes place in the weeks *before* the first film — it is a prequel showing what was happening to Katie's sister's family at the same time.

Then its final scene jumps to *after* the first film ends, and directly continues it. So it is both, and it only works if you place it immediately before the original.

Where to stop

The first three films are the good ones — the original for its patience, the second for the structural trick, the third for being genuinely frightening and the best-made of the run.

From the fourth onward the series runs out of ideas fast. The Ghost Dimension is where the mythology gets explained, which is exactly what a series built on not showing you anything should never do.
