Even the reboot is not a reboot

The 2022 film is a "requel" — a term the film itself uses. It brings in a new young cast and takes the shape of a reboot, but it is a direct sequel that keeps everything before it canon, with the original characters returning.

So there is nothing to skip and nothing to reconcile. Start at 1996 and go forwards.

Which ones matter

Scream (1996) is essential and still the best. Scream 2 is a strong sequel. Scream 4 is the underrated one — it arrived eleven years later aimed at remake culture, and it has aged into looking prescient.

Scream 3 is the weak entry of the original run. The modern films are solid, and each assumes real familiarity with what came before.

Can I skip to the 2022 film?

Not really. It is built almost entirely on the original — the legacy characters, the rules established in 1996, and one central reveal that depends on knowing the first film. Watch at least Scream (1996) first.
