The one thing worth explaining is Lightyear, which almost everyone misunderstands.

What Lightyear actually is

It is not a prequel about the character Buzz Lightyear. It is presented as the film Andy saw in 1995 — the in-universe movie that the Buzz toy was merchandise for.

So it does not sit at a point in the Toy Story timeline. It sits alongside it, as a film that exists inside that world. Watch it whenever, or not at all; nothing in the main series depends on it.

Where the series peaks

Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 are the high points. Two is the one that works out what the series is actually about — being outgrown — and Three delivers the payoff, including a sequence that has genuinely upset adults for fifteen years.

Toy Story 4 is an epilogue that was not obviously needed and turned out to justify itself.

Toy Story 5

Released 19 June 2026, directed by Andrew Stanton, with Randy Newman scoring his fifth film in the series. The toys face a tablet.
