Can you skip Skeleton Crew?
Yes, on a first watch. It is self-contained, and nothing in the main Star Wars story depends on it. Come back to it later if you want more. Show only the Star Wars essentials.
Skippable, and the most purely enjoyable optional thing here. Four children from a quiet suburban planet find a buried ship, accidentally launch themselves across the galaxy, and spend eight episodes trying to get home. It needs nothing before it.
The model is explicitly the 1980s children's adventure film, which the franchise has never attempted: bicycles, cul-de-sacs, parents who do not know where anybody is, and a world that turns out to be much larger and more dangerous than the map suggested. The pirate setting is a part of this galaxy nobody had used, and treating hyperspace routes as sea lanes with ports and criminals pays off.
Jude Law is the reason it works. His character's loyalties are genuinely unresolved for most of the season, and the show gets real tension out of four children relying on an adult who may be about to sell them. He plays it without ever tipping his hand.
The pace sags in the middle and the ending resolves tidily. It is a self-contained eight hours in the Mandalorian era with no homework and no consequences, which is a rare thing on this page.
