Eleven features, five of them Mad Max films. The saga has its own ordering question — covered on the Mad Max page — but the short version is that it is not a continuity. Miller has described the films as retellings, the way a legend gets retold, and the details contradict each other on purpose.
That means you can start anywhere in the saga. Most people should start at the fourth one.

Start with Fury Road
Thirty years after Beyond Thunderdome, at seventy, Miller made what is widely considered the best action film of the century. It won six Academy Awards. It requires no knowledge of the first three films whatsoever.
It is also, structurally, a remake of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) — the same chase, the same convoy, the same premise. Watch that second and the relationship is obvious.
The first film is the odd one
Mad Max (1979) is not post-apocalyptic. It is a revenge film set in a society that is visibly collapsing but has not collapsed yet, and it was made for around four hundred thousand Australian dollars — partly funded by Miller working shifts as an emergency-room doctor.
The wasteland everyone associates with the series starts in the second film.
The films that are not Mad Max
This is where the filmography gets genuinely strange. The Witches of Eastwick (1987) is a Jack Nicholson studio comedy. Lorenzo's Oil (1992) is a medical drama about parents researching a cure for their son — and the medicine in it is precise, because Miller was a doctor. Happy Feet (2006) is a tap-dancing penguin musical that won the animation Oscar and is much bleaker than its marketing suggested.
Babe: Pig in the City (1998) is worth clearing up: he wrote and produced the 1995 Babe but did not direct it. He directed only the sequel, which is far darker, flopped, and has a genuine critical following.
Furiosa
Furiosa (2024) is a fifteen-year prequel told in chapters, and it is deliberately slower and more novelistic than Fury Road. People expecting Fury Road again were disappointed; people expecting a different film were not.
Watch it after Fury Road, not before. It is built to be a prequel, and it assumes you know where the character ends up.
